Saugatuck, MI Itinerary

Saugatuck, MI is a hidden gem here in the Midwest which is perfect for a long weekend trip! Not only are there tons of amazing nearby wineries and breweries, but there are also some delicious restaurants, shops and gorgeous beaches. We had so many amazing experiences on our trip last year that we had to come back again. We went back to some of our favorite spots but also tried some amazing new places as well! Based on our trip, here are our recommendations for your next trip to Saugatuck.

Where to Eat

Bowdie's Chophouse is one of our absolute favorite spots in Saugatuck! We stopped by during our last trip and made it a priority for this trip because we loved it so much! Not only do they have some of the best steak we've ever had, but they also have amazing service and homemade quality ingredients. We absolutely loved everything -and mushrooms as a side are a MUST!

Another delicious spot we tried is The Mermaid which is right on the water. This was the perfect spot for some amazing seafood and amazing views of the lake. It's a perfect spot to watch the sunset or to even come for a yummy cocktail for Happy Hour! I got the salmon and Kris got the pecan crusted walleye and both were absolutely phenomenal.

For brunch we stopped by Grow Cafe & Bistro and really enjoyed it! They have great mimosa specials and even a mimosa flight which looked amazing. I got the carrot cake pancakes which were so yummy and perfect for fall. Kris got the Carnitas skillet which he really loved as well. Make sure to put your name in early though because it was about 30-40 minutes before we were sat. We just used that time to walk around and explore the shops.

On Sunday, we wanted to grab a quick lunch to take to the beach, so we stopped by Tree of Life Juice. They have a great variety of cold pressed juices, smoothies, coffee avocado toast, and acai bowls. We both got coffee and acai bowls which were super fresh and perfect for the beach! This is a great spot for a quick grab and go juice or smoothie as a mid-day pick me up as well.

Wineries

One of our favorite new wineries was Michigan Wine Co. The space is stunning and they even allow you to explore/walk around through the vines. We hung out and even played some cornhole while we sampled 4 of their wines. We really loved the chill vibes and friendly staff here and would definitely come back!

Gravity winery is one of our favorite wineries and a must-visit for all of our Michigan winery trips. Gravity is located a bit farther south than Saugatuck (about a 45 minute drive), but it is definitely worth the drive and is located near several other wineries as well. It's a great spot to drive down to and make a day of it. Gravity had a live band and even a food truck which made it a great spot to relax and spend the afternoon. The property is absolutely gorgeous as well with a view of the vineyards and pond.

Modales winery is another super cute spot near Saugatuck. They have a large property with indoor and outdoor seating. However, I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you want to be able to sit inside. They also require advanced reservations for wine tastings so make sure to look into this if you're looking to do a tasting.

Dablon Vineyards was our favorite winery from the last time we made a trip to Michigan. We both like drier wines and Dablon has a lot of dry wines to choose from. The Cabernet Franc is one of our favorites. The inside is absolutely gorgeous and the outside area is amazing as well. They even had a live band over the weekend as well!

We tried to visit Virtue Cider for the 2nd time on this trip and unfortunately left disappointed again. It was a rainy day, but they have absolutely no indoor seating. All of the covered seating (with umbrellas) was only for people who had made reservations in advance - even though there were SEVERAL tables completely open. So on top of not having a covered seating area, you also couldn't order any food at all if you hadn't made a reservation. By the time we had gotten there we were hungry and hoping to have a cheese board or some sort of snack but were unable to order since we hadn't made a reservation. Even though this is one of the more well known cider companies in the country, on top of not having indoor seating, they also only had port-o-potties for guests to use. I definitely don't recommend checking it out unless you either make a reservation or go during a day the weather is perfect and you don't plan on eating. The Saugatuck area has so many amazing wineries/breweries that have indoor areas, nicer staff, restrooms, and allow everyone to order food so I think it's worth skipping over this stop.

Things to Do

Not only does Saugatuck have some amazing wineries and restaurants, but there are a lot of other great things to do in town. Oval Beach is a gorgeous Lake Michigan Beach located in the Saugatuck area. You can pack a cute picnic and make a day of it. The weather was perfect for just a relaxing afternoon on the sand. They even have a yummy concession stand nearby for you to grab a snack or drink.

Explore the shops

Saugatuck is also known for the cute little shops and stores throughout the town. From wine shops to clothing stores to coffee shops to souvenir shops - there is something for everyone. We bought art, clothing and some souvenirs for family on our trip. We even stopped by Uncommon Coffee Roasters for an afternoon pick-me-up. It's definitely a great rainy day activity or a fun activity while you wait for your table at one of the restaurants.

The Root Beer Barrel is another famous Saugatuck spot that is a must-visit! Not only is it just neat because it is a giant root beer barrel, but they also have yummy lunch options and of course delicious root beer. It's a huge lunch time spot, so make sure you get there early before the line gets super long!

Dessert Spots

After a long day of exploring the wineries, we were hungry for a snack and decided to make a stop at Crane's Pie Pantry. They have a full lunch/dinner menu and lots of amazing desserts. They even have a to-go counter to grab treats to go. We ended up coming in to try their pie flight (that's a right a flight of PIES) and it was fantastic! The flight was a sampling of apple, blueberry, rhubard & raspberry, and cherry pies. Every pie was absolutely phenomenal and was definitely worth the trip!

Although not a local spot to Saugatuck, Kilwins' is still a must-visit spot for all things dessert! They are known for their candy, fudge and ice cream.

Newport, RI Travel Guide

Newport, RI is one of my favorite places I've traveled in the U.S. and there are so many amazing must-try spots! It's my second time traveling here and I can't recommend it enough. If you love East Coast vibes and a relaxing coastal trip, check out Newport!

Where to Eat

The first night we arrived, we checked out White Horse Tavern which is “America’s Oldest Tavern.” Not only does it have some neat history, but also some incredible food and drinks! We kicked it off with the shredded Brussel sprouts as an appetizer which were phenomenal. I also had the catch of the day which was super yummy and fresh! They also have a cute little patio if you want to enjoy the outside area as well.

For brunch on Friday morning we checked out Corner Cafe which is a cute local cafe that seems to be a local favorite. They have an extensive breakfast/brunch menu that includes omelettes, french toast, salads and more! I had the avocado toast which was super yummy and very filling. Definitely recommend grabbing breakfast/brunch here if you have a chance.

Bar Cino is one of the spots we visited on my previous trip to Newport and it was so amazing that I insisted we go again. They serve all things Italian, including my personal fave - the grilled pizza. This pizza is nothing like anything I have ever had before with the thin, grilled and crispy crust. It is so fresh and flavorful and one of my favorite pizzas I've had in my lifetime (and that is coming from a girl who lives in Chicago - one of the best spots for pizza). Do not skip Bar Cino if you're in the Newport area!

No Rhode Island trip would be complete without some high quality seafood. Midtown Oyster Bar definitely checks that box! The quality was so good and the seafood and oysters were super fresh. This place books up quick so make sure to make a reservation in advance. I got the Kale Salad and Blackened Mahi Mahi which were both out of this world!

If you make a trip to Easton Beach (one of the more popular beaches in Newport) be sure to check out the Snack Bar for some incredible lobster rolls! 2 mini lobster rolls and fries for only around $22 - it's an unbeatable deal! The lobster rolls are packed with lobster meat and so fresh. They also have some yummy other snacks like pretzels, nachos, and even ice cream.

What to Do

The Lawn at Castle Hill is a stunning spot with impeccable views. You can stay at Castle Hill Inn or even visit the restaurant there for lunch/dinner. We didn't choose to eat there, but instead we grabbed a seat and drinks on the lawn. It was fun and relaxing to watch the boats go by and sip on a yummy cocktail. The chairs are first come first serve so keep that in mind if you come at peak hours (sunset time).

It's not a trip to Newport without a ride on a sailboat! We booked a fun Mimosa Sail with Sight Sailing of Newport and had an absolute blast. They provided mimosas throughout the trip and provided us interesting information regarding the sights we saw on the trip (learned that Judge Judy has a home in Newport!). It was so fun and refreshing to be out on the water seeing all the amazing views on the ship! They have several different cruise options (including private sails as well).

Newport has many gorgeous mansions, but the Breakers Mansion definitely takes the cake! It was a summer home of the Vanderbilt family with lots of great history. This mansion is absolutely enormous and so stunning. It's definitely a fun and educational opportunity to do during the daytime. We especially were amazed by the gorgeous and elaborate rooms throughout the tour.

Another must-do activity in Newport is the Cliff Walk. The views are absolutely immaculate and unlike any I have seen before. The entire walk is a little over 3 miles and goes right along the Atlantic ocean on one side and some gorgeous Newport mansions (including the Breakers Mansion) on the other side. Even if you don't do the entire walk, it is still worth checking out for sure! Added bonus is - you'll definitely get your daily steps in!

One of my favorite spots from my last Newport trip was Newport Vineyards winery. Unfortunately, we weren't able to make it there this trip (there was a wedding there on Saturday evening). However, if you have a chance, I definitely recommend it. The vineyard has stunning views of the Newport countryside along with delicious wine and food. Make sure to make a reservation in advance so you can make sure there isn't a wedding during the day you plan to visit.

Enjoy your trip to Newport!!

Nashville Trip Guide

This past weekend, we took a girl's trip to Nashville and had the best time! We were blessed with amazing sunny (and very hot) weather. We checked out lots of great spots and wanted to share some of our faves.

Where to Stay

We were fortunate enough to stay at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in downtown Nashville. This hotel is located right on Broadway and is only about a half a mile walk from most of the restaurants/bars on Broadway which made it super convenient. The hotel was super nice and updated with amazing amenities including, a pool, fitness center, lobby bar with live music, coffee shop and rooftop bar! The pool was super fun and lively. They had private cabanas you could rent as well as accessible chairs/loungers. On the weekends, the pool has a DJ which gave it a young and hip vibe. Since it was so hot on Saturday, this was where we ended up spending a good chunk of our afternoon.

Where to Eat

The first night we arrived in Nashville, we were excited to be there and wanted to go to a place that was easy and fast but still had great food. We chose to check out Acme Feed & Seed which is one of my favorite spots on Broadway! I got the Nashville hot chicken which is always phenomenal and served on Texas toast. They also have some other great options including dry rub wings! The great part about Acme is you order at a counter and have your order brought out to you and you can take it anywhere in the restaurant (they have 3 floors).

The 1st floor is a restaurant and bar with live music regularly. We got a drink here while we waited for our food and listened to the band. The 2nd floor is for sushi which looks super delicious as well. Then the rooftop is really fun too with yummy cocktails and a great view of Broadway/the river.

Hampton Social is an iconic Nashville spot for their fun Nashville flower wall and instagrammable decor. However, it is SO much more than that! They have amazing food and drinks as well! They are known for their seafood which is phenomenal ((the lobster roll is my favorite), but they also have some traditional American dishes as well like flatbreads and burgers. This spot is just right off of Broadway and a great place for brunch or dinner before hitting the bars.

E+Rose is a perfect breakfast spot if you're looking for something healthy! They have acai bowls, smoothies, avocado toast, coffee and more! There are multiple locations throughout the city and have quick and easy ordering at the counter for either a grab & go or sit down experience. I had the acai bowl called The Pro and I highly recommend!

Bartaco has been one of my long-time favorite Nashville spots! The food is so fresh and also super affordable (tacos range from $2.75-6.75). They have some of the freshest margaritas and guacamole as well. Bartaco is located in a cute spot about 10 minutes from downtown called 12 South. This is a great spot to check out during the day as there are lots of cute coffee shops, boutiques and shops in the area as well.

Things to Do

If you are looking a fun spot to spend the day in Nashville, Sonny's is a must! They are open for all ages and have a great patio area with outdoor games, tvs and fun photo ops! We spent several hours here drinking Margarita and Mimosa flights on the patio and chilling in our own little cabana in the shade. This spot is in Germantown, so a little bit of a drive from downtown/Broadway, but it is a great way to explore other parts of Nashville if you have some time!

Amelia's flower truck is an iconic must-visit spot in Nashville. Not only is it so adorable and Instagrammable, but the flowers are actually gorgeous and you are able to make your own bouquet! They take the truck to different spots throughout the city and post their schedule on their site, so make sure to look up where they will be when you visit!

You have probably already seen by now, but White Limozeen is an adorable Dolly Parton themed bar/restaurant on the rooftop of the Graduate Hotel in Nashville. This spot is super cute and all pink/Dolly themed. However, it is extremely hard to get into so make your reservations in advance. The reservations open exactly 2 weeks in advance from the date you want to go and book up right at midnight! We tried to go and get a seat at the bar and were put on a waitlist but unfortunately never were able to make it up to White Limozeen. The Graduate Hotel lobby was super cute though and we were able to get some fun photos there as well so it's definitely worth stopping by!

Night Life

Nashville is known for their fun bars, but Broadway can be overwhelming if you don't know which places to check out. Here were some of our faves!
Honky Tonk

Honkey Tonk Central is always a favorite of mine when I visit Nashville. It is usually packed, but not too overcrowded to where you can't walk. They have 4 different floors with live music on each. The bands play a variety of music from country, to pop, to even alternative. This spot is always a good time and worth stopping by at least once on your trip to Nashville!

Casa Rosa is a new bar opened by Miranda Lambert, making it the first female country singer's bar on Broadway! This spot has a fun and girlie vibe with lots of cute photo ops and yummy flavored frozen margaritas. The first floor had live music, the 2nd floor is a restaurant, and the 3rd floor has a DJ, so there is truly something for everyone here!

These were just a few of our favorite spots on our trip! Hope this helps with planning your next trip to Nashville!
